They needed a paint salesman in the Spartanburg area; just perfect for what we want to do. I ended up doing the interview in Charlotte, NC, at one of their industrial stores. (Industrial paint stores tend to cater to large volume paint contractors, government accounts and heavy industries with special technical requirements.) I thought the interview went very well and I really liked the fellow I interviewed with. Had I got the job he would have been my boss and he appeared to be the kind of man I would love to work with; even keeled with a smoldering drive to succeed. Like many in the industry, he worked his way up the ladder through a succession of positions at different companies. Like me, he had started with Sherwin Williams, lending credence to the old adage that "Sherwin Williams has trained the industry!" He was distracted by some problem when I arrived and he kept me waiting for close to an hour so I took the opportunity to get a sense of the store. The manager was easy enough to spot but not because he was barking orders. The store had that feeling of good natured effort and the easy going banter common to jobs where you can work and talk at the same time. This is a very good sign as it speaks highly of the management style of those in authority. I saw no signs of angst or tension that are common is less well managed workplaces. Overall, I was impressed and was certain that there would be a good fit between me and PPG. However, that was not to be. At least not now. I sent my interviewer an email the day after he said he would make his decision. He wrote back late that evening to say he regretted to tell me that had chosen someone else. He also added, "We were fortunate to gather a pool of great candidates with both industry and market experience" which seems to suggest that they hired from within. Either that or they hired someone from a competitor. (When I first started in the paint industry I was told that "every six months someone blows a whistle and everyone changes companies!" Not quite true, but close enough.) I can't blame him for choosing someone who already knew the accounts they would be calling on; I probably would have made the same decision. Yes, I had loads of experience, perhaps more than anyone else, but there is no substitute for finding someone who already has relationships with the big accounts in town. That's a hurdle I am going to have to think about some more. In the meantime, I'd like to keep in touch with my interviewer.
